Announcing the Bush Institute Economy Debates Qualifier (9/28/13)

The National Association for Urban Debate Leagues has invited the Chicago Debate League to be one of four Urban Debate Leagues to participate in a new national urban debate event, the 2013 Bush Institute Economy Debates. These debates will take place at the George W. Bush Institute, in Dallas, Texas, October 19th – 20th, 2013. Four CDL teams, along with their coaches, will be flown down to Dallas for the weekend, all expenses paid, to compete in a two-day tournament. Not all of the specifics have been set, but it may feature four rounds of standard policy debates on the Latin America topic on October 19th, with the top four teams breaking to the semi-finals on October 20th. The semi-finals and final round may be a modified, more public debate format, on a U.S. economy topic TBA.

The CDL will be holding a Bush Institute Economy Debates Qualifier on Saturday, September 28th, at a location also TBA. Later this summer the CDL will post a brief application on which schools can declare their interest in participating in the qualifier. We will select 10 schools, no more than five from any one conference. Each selected school will be required to enter two teams in the qualifier, and will receive a $250 incentive.

Our qualifier may be structured like an National Forensic League district qualifier — which means a double-elimination competition, all teams continue to debate until they lose two rounds, at which point they are eliminated. The qualifier ends when four teams from four different schools are separated from the other sixteen at the event. Additional details to be ironed out and then announced. The schedule for the day will start with a presentation from a Bush Institute economist (even though the qualifier will be standard format, Latin America topic), then straight debates, with a break for lunch, and should run from 8am – 6pm for the teams that go the distance, earlier ending time for teams eliminated earlier.

Our 9/28 qualifier itself promises to be an exciting, early-season, inter-conference Varsity competition in the CDL Season Calendar. It will explicitly not only be for one conference — all competitively ambitious schools from all conferences should feel encouraged to apply to participate.

The Bush Institute Economy Debates themselves are a debate-travel opportunity, and a first-semester national urban debate competition at which Chicago will have a chance to shine.

Announcing the 2013 Chicago Middle School Debate Institute

The Chicago Debate Summer Institute (CDSI) is a two-week training camp that has launched the Chicago Debate League high school season for many years. It was designed to replicate the educational impact of university debate institutes costing thousands of dollars, and Chicago established one of the largest and most high-impact urban debate summer camps in the nation.

This year, for the first time in the history of the city of Chicago, a one-week summer debate training camp is being offered to middle schoolers: the Chicago Middle School Debate Institute. The CMSDI is being run in conjunction with the first week of the CDSI, and will build on its long tradition of educational impact, professionalism, and excitement.

Dates, Times, Location

The 2013 Chicago Middle School Debate Institute will be held July 29th – August 2nd, Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 3:30pm.

The location is not yet determined; we hope to have it announced soon.

Curriculum and Schedule

The CMSDI will have “lab groups” for each level of experience in the Chicago Middle School Debate League. It will emphasize fundamental skills building, and a thorough introduction to the 2013/14 Latin America debate topic. The CMSDI will apply lessons learned over years of administering the CDSI, including interactive educational methods and practices, careful instructor placement, and individualized learning strategies that ensure that every student attending the CMSDI leaves it a markedly improved debater, and ready for Tournament One.

The curriculum and schedule will include demonstration debates, practice debates and speeches, and special group seminars.

A daily schedule will be posted on the CDL site later this summer.

Instructional Staff

The CMSDI has just begun the process of hiring its staff but will include outstanding and accomplished debate teachers, highly successful debaters and coaches, a low student:instructor ratio, and faculty with experience working with middle school students.

Additional Provisions

Lunch, but not breakfast, will be provided free daily.

Each student participating will receive a set of 2013/14 Core Files and filing materials. The file set will be the high school version, from which the final CMSDL Core Files will be derived.

Student incentives will be provided.

Transportation is the responsibility of each participating student.

Fee and Tuition

All students must pay a $25 registration fee. The registration fee should be paid by each individual student, not by the school, since its primary purpose is to reduce attrition (to help ensure that the student attends). There is also an additional $100 for tuition ($125 total), though tuition reductions and waivers are available in instances of financial need.

Please contact Les for the tuition reduction or waiver appeal procedure.

Registration

Each interested student should submit a completed 2013 CMSDI Registration Form.

Each student should also mail in a copy of the completed form, along with a check for their registration fee and (if they are non-Title I) tuition. The form and check should be mailed to:

Chicago Debate Commission
332 S. Michigan Ave., Suite 500
Chicago, IL 60604

The deadline for registration is June 14th.

Why You Should Encourage Your Debaters to Attend the CMSDI

The reasons that the Chicago Debate Commission is funding the 2013 CDSI I think are eloquent, convincing, and accurate reasons that you should strongly encourage as many of your students as are available to register for this first time ever Chicago Middle School Debate League!

  • University-based summer debate institutes — long recognized as powerful tools for high school debaters to develop skills and advance their competitive edge – cost thousands of dollars and are financially out-of-reach for most of our students. Summer debate institutes offer a unique opportunity on the calendar to access the most experienced, most accomplished university debate instructors for our students. The CDSI brings the benefits of university-based summer debate training to Chicago’s students, raising the qualitative level of their debating, at no cost for low-income students and very modest cost for other students.
  • The CDSI increases student engagement in debate. Participants become excited about starting the season and hit the ground running when debate begins in the fall.
  • The CDSI increases student leadership. Participants bring the skills and enthusiasm they gain at the CDSI to their peers in mentoring and peer-instructional roles.
  • The CDSI increases competitive edge. After the CDSI, students feel better prepared to compete and show more enthusiasm for debate tournament participation, which can then be activated on the regular-season squad.

Announcing the 2013 Chicago Debate Summer Institute

The Chicago Debate Summer Institute is the two week training camp that has launched the Chicago Debate League season since the origination of the league, back in the summer of 1997. It was designed to replicate the educational impact of university debate institutes costing thousands of dollars, and Chicago established one of the largest and most high-impact urban debate summer camps in the nation.

Last year CPS had to cut back its summer enrichment funding, and unfortunately the CDSI was a casualty. But this year, thanks to fund-raising done by the Chicago Debate Commission — and a small group of generous donors – the CDSI is back!

Dates, Times, Location

The 2013 Chicago Debate Summer Institute will be held July 29th – August 9th, Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 3:30pm.

The location is not yet determined; we hope to have it announced soon.

Curriculum and Schedule

The CDSI has a finely honed curriculum that emphasizes skills building, aligned with the CDL Debater Development Benchmarks, and topic immersion. The CDSI serves every level of debate experience — from raw beginner just recently recruited, to National Circuit Varsity elim round veteran — with carefully drawn lab groupings, instructor placement, and individualized learning strategies that ensure that every student attending the CDSI leaves it a markedly improved debater, and ready for Tournament One.

The curriculum and schedule will include demonstration debates, practice debates and speeches, special group seminars, and a two-day pre-season debate tournament.

A daily schedule will be posted on the CDL site later this summer.

Instructional Staff

The CDSI has just begun the process of hiring its staff but intends to hire some of the best debate teachers, and most accomplished debaters and coaches, available, both locally and from outside the immediate area. The CDSI has a history of having a superb instructors, providing our students with a unique opportunity on the year-long calendar to learn from a diverse group of such highly-qualified teachers.

Additional Provisions

Lunch, but not breakfast, will be provided free daily.

Each student participating will receive a set of 2013/14 Core Files and filing materials.

Student incentives will be provided, along with awards at the CDSI Tournament.

CTA passes are not included, so if students require those they should be provided by their school.

Fee and Tuition

All students must pay a $25 registration fee. The registration fee should be paid by each individual student, not by the school, since its primary purpose is to reduce attrition (to help ensure that the student attends). Tuition is an additional $125 ($150 total), though there are tuition reductions or waivers in instances of financial need.

Please contact Les for the tuition reduction or waiver appeal procedure.

Registration

Each interested student should submit a completed 2013 CDSI Registration Form. Coaches should monitor their interested students’ registration and can submit their students electronic forms.

Each student should also mail in a copy of the completed form, along with a check for their registration fee and (if they are non-Title I) tuition. The form and check should be mailed to:

Chicago Debate Commission
332 S. Michigan Ave., Suite 500

The deadline for registration is June 14th.

CDL and CMSDL School Membership in the National Forensic League

NFL_logo

All CDL and CMSDL schools are currently being enrolled in the National Forensic League for no charge — no charge now or in future years. Additionally, for this year the NFL is doing all of the administrative paperwork entering students’ participation points.

Only a few schools are being held back, having not yet completed their SY2013 enrollment and attendance in Cityspan, or (for guest schools) not yet having sent us their SY2013 student roster. Regarding guest schools in the CDL, currently this offer for free membership to the NFL is being offered to CMSDL guest schools but not CDL guest schools.

If you wish to opt out of membership in the NFL, just send us an email saying so.

The benefits to membership in the National Forensic League are:

  • Credential of having an NFL-certified debate program established at your school — certification that you, your students, and your administration can use in your advocacy for your program
  • Certificates and seals sent to you and your students, as part of the NFL’s “honor society”
  • Monthly issue of The Rostrum, the NFL’s publication
  • Eligibility to debate at the National Forensic League district and national tournaments

Principals are being sent letters from the NFL telling them that they are now an National Forensic League chapter school, and should get those letters by the end of the school year. Similarly, coaches should get their students’ certificates and seals by the end of June for their participation in competitive academic debate activities this year.

Announcing the 2013/14 Debate Topic and the First New-Topic Seminar

The 2013/14 national policy debate topic for both high school and middle school is being called Latin America:

Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its economic engagement toward Cuba, Mexico or Venezuela.

The National Federation of State High School Associations has a breakdown of the topic voting by state, and a link to the topic paper on Latin America.

We’ll be posting Latin America topic materials on the CDL site over the next two months, and will let you know when we have something substantial up.

This Saturday, April 27th, 10am – 12pm is the first student seminar on the new topic, presented by our partners at the University of Chicago, Rising Phoenix Debate, in Hyde Park.

UofChicagoStudentSeminarFlyer13.04.22

This seminar will focus on Debater Development Benchmarks for year one and two debaters:

Introduction to the Topic
(19) Broad knowledge of the public policy context from which the topic comes

Introduction to Debate Research
(35) Techniques for electronic and library research, including the collection of cites from opponents, and from wikis
(36) Targeted research: researching for individual pieces of debate evidence

Register your interested debaters with Rising Phoenix Debate leader Carlos Penikis, carlos.penikis@gmail.com.

Draft of the SY2014 CDL/CMSDL Season Calendar

When you get a chance, please carefully review our draft of the SY2014 CDL/CMSDL Season Calendar against any other calendar that you think might present a potential date conflict of significance.

Coaches and administrators have consistently requested that our schedule for the following year be established before the end of the school year, and the CDL administration has substantial work to do in identifying sites and preparing logistics for the 30+ tournaments on our calendar after its set. So we plan to have the SY2014 Season Calendar finalized, set, and posted on June 1st. Please provide your feedback — either to the CDL administration directly, or to your CDL Coach Council representatives (HS) or CMSDL Coach Council representatives (Chris McCabe, Greg Thompson, Brent Turpin), who will be discussing the calendar at their final meeting of the year in mid-May — early and prior to the 6/1 deadline.
